Why Do I Need Invisalign Refinements?

Woman holding Invisalign alignerInvisalign is the clear choice in orthodontics because it’s virtually undetectable. No brackets or wires are used to align your teeth. Instead, clear aligners are worn over them to apply continual pressure to ease them into their best positions. Most treatment plans progress as expected, but there are times when teeth don’t always move as predicted. It’s not unusual for a patient to need Invisalign refinements, which are additional aligners required after beginning your treatment. Don’t worry if you need a few adjustments along the way. Here’s why refinements might be necessary to achieve your best smile.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a system that uses a series of custom-made aligners that are worn for at least 22 hours per day. Each aligner moves your teeth in small increments, effectively fixing many bite and alignment issues. You’ll switch to a new aligner in the series every 1-2 weeks, depending on your treatment plan. Although every case differs, most patients are finished with their aligners in about 12 months.

What are Invisalign Refinements?

You won’t need appointments for adjustments because there aren’t any brackets or wires, but you’ll still need to see your dentist every few weeks to monitor your teeth’s movements. If your treatment isn’t progressing as expected, your dentist might recommend making some adjustments, called Invisalign refinements. 20% of Invisalign users require modifications.

How Do Invisalign Refinements Work?

Your refinement aligners will look just like the trays you’re already using. They will be made to address specific concerns using a digital impression method.

Every aligner will apply the right amount of pressure on specific teeth to move them. There will be one minor change to your typical routine. You’ll switch your aligners every 2-3 weeks, depending on your dentist’s instructions. The number of refinements required will be determined by your situation.

Preventing Invisalign Refinements

80% to 90% of Invisalign wearers don’t need refinements. You can lessen your risk of needing adjustments by keeping a few tips in mind:

  • Wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day.
  • Don’t go for a long time without wearing your aligners.
  • Wear your aligners in the correct order.
  • Switch to the next aligner in your series on time.
  • Maintain regular check-ins with your dentist.

Although no one ever expects their treatment plan to change, Invisalign refinements will ensure the best results from your investment. Your dentist will make the modifications necessary to create a straight, beautiful smile.
